W1 - Introduction

Welcome everyone to the first post of the Game Project Auld

As part of our Games Development course at the University of the West of Scotland we’ve been tasked with producing a game for our Games Development Project module. Throughout this year myself and my team will be updating this blog every week keeping you apprised as to what we have been up to that week involving the development of our game.

For the first week of our module we formed our team of which includes James Keohane Vincent Berthet and myself ( Ryan Kennedy). After we formed our team we continued to have our first team meeting which involved a discussion among ourselves as to which type of games we were interested in developing for the module, eventually we settled on the idea of creating a 2D real time strategy game.

The game will be set in space and will involve 2 players and their respective planetary bases fighting each other over precious resources and dominion. The players will be able to choose a race to represent themselves in the game and let the war begin!

The main objectif is to overpower your opponent by physically destroying them with your armaments, through technology advancement, or starving them of resources, through military advancement. Upgrade your planetary shields in order to protect your main planet who produce technology to advance to the era of evolution !

After our team agreed on our concept we discussed about various software which would be used in the development process of our game.

We decided upon using Unreal Engine 4 our main reasoning behind this was that we had previous experience, the blueprint technology is awesome since we'll have a lot of game mechanics to keep track of and as well as the fact that it’s a great piece of software in general.

Delegation was another priority as this is a team effort, we settled on James being our Team leader and myself and Vincent as general developers however we would all be contributing to the development and management of the project. As far as communicating between team members we've chosen to use Slack and as for delegating the workload we've chosen Trello this should make our development process much more efficient. Google Drive will ne used as our main file storage.

Now that we had the basis of the idea as well as efficient methods to manage and communicate throughout our development we proceeded to schedule our next meeting and left it there, please bear in mind that some of the ideas we have may be subject to change over the course of the Games Development however we've made a good start to our Project and I look forward to the future and what it holds.

Ryan
